We Have a Roller!

This morning I was woken up by Peter crying at 4 am, which hasn't happened in ages. I went to check on him, thinking that he just needed to have his diaper changed, and I found him on his stomach. That explained the crying, since he hates tummy time with the fire of a thousand suns.

It was the first time that he rolled over, and I'm a little bummed that neither Geoff nor I was able to see it. So far, I've only seen him get half way, and he stops the second that he sees the video camera. I'm hoping that I'll be able to see it soon, although part of me can't believe how fast he is growing. He is now that much closer to being a mobile baby.

Peter's Baptism

Yesterday, Geoff and I had Peter baptized at the church where we got married. It was his first time at a service, and he was not a fan of the loud organ (a sign that we should go to the quieter 8 am service). While he was being fussy at the beginning of the service, he fell asleep during the sermon, which comes right before the baptism. I was concerned that being woken by the water would cause a major melt down, especially since the other two babies did not take it very well. Peter was the last of the three to be baptized, and he was perfectly calm the entire time. Reverend Tom kept holding Peter as he finished the baptismal blessings and walked down the aisle to the front. It was a beautiful service, and I am so glad that we were able to be a part of it.

After the service, we had a wonderful brunch reception with some friends and family. It was nice that so many people were able to come to celebrate with us.

We were so happy when Uncle David, Uncle Greg and Aunt Aggie agreed to be Peter's Godparents. Peter wore the gown that my grandmother made for my father, and that I also wore. Here are some pictures with more in the full album. The album is a collection of pictures from a few different people, and I will add pictures if I get any more.

Getting Even Bigger!

Peter is now in the 90th percentile for weight, tipping the scales at 15 pounds 7 ounces, and above the 95th percentile for height at 26.5 inches. He is growing so fast, and I can definitely feel it when I hold him.

Happy Three Month!

It's been three months since Peter was born, and he seems to be changing daily. He is getting so big and is accomplishing so much.

He smiles and laughs freely now. He doesn't seems to be ticklish, but every once in a while tickling will get big laughs out of him. He loves to talk, and has long conversations. He will tell Geoff all about his day when he gets home at night, and I love seeing the two of them interacting like that.

He loves his play gym and spends much more time talking to the octopus. He has also figured out that if he kicks the gym, everything will shake, and once in a while will grab on to the octopus's ring and shake him from there. He has started to swat at the whale on his bouncer, which is the only moving part that is within his reach.

If you put on music, he moves like he is trying to dance. He also loves to hear Disney songs, they get big smiles, and he will sing along with "Teddy Bear's Picnic".

He is much calmer when he is having his diaper changed, even though he still hates it when he pees. He will try to talk to you while you change him, and he holds on to his diaper and your hand.

He is sleeping through the night two to three times a week. Even on the nights that he doesn't sleep through, he really only gets up once. He does nap during the day, and unfortunately, it is usually in my arms. That is a habit that I would like to break. He will also nap in the stroller, but he fights it since he loves being outside so much.

He is trying so hard to roll over. He gets about half way there, and then can't get any further. You can tell that it frustrates him, but it doesn't seem like it will be too much longer before he can do it. He also is very good at holding his head up on his own. It seems his favorite position is over my shoulder, looking around. That is not so much fun for my back.

Finally, here are some pictures of our big boy. These are all in the July album, which I will keep updating throughout the month.

The summer that there was no ice cream...

We are pretty sure that Peter has a milk protein allergy. It doesn't seem to bother him at all, and he is still growing like crazy so it isn't affecting his nutrition.

A few people have asked me how we know, so here is what happened.

About a month ago, I had noticed blood in Peter's diaper. It wasn't a lot, just a few clots of bright red blood, but enough to freak me out. I took him to the pediatrician who confirmed that I wasn't just seeing things, and that there was in fact blood in the diaper. She explained that bright red blood comes from further down the digestive track and is usually caused by either a (cow) milk protein allergy or a fissure. Since there was no sign of a fissure, we decided that I would cut dairy out of my diet since I am breastfeeding and see if that cleared it up. If that worked, we would re-introduce the dairy after a month and see what happened.

It cleared up, then a few days later it came back. It cleared up again, then it came back. It cleared up, but when it came back a third time and there was still no sign of a fissure, the pediatrician decided to send us to a pediatric GI specialist.

The specialist explained that a milk protein allergy isn't like a regular allergy. There are large pores in a baby's intestines which the milk proteins (which are also large) can get stuck in. These pores shrink at about a year which is why most babies outgrow the allergy. She also explained that milk is used as a filler in a lot of items that you would never expect, such as hot dogs and deli meats. She was just about positive that Peter does have a milk protein allergy. She also thinks that he is probably one of the 15% of babies with a milk protein allergy who are also allergic to soy. This would explain why the blood kept coming back, since I was having a lot of soy heavy meals (yummy Japanese food). She wants me to completely cut out all possible milk and soy, and if it doesn't completely clear up in two weeks we will go back to see her.

If you thought that a lot of things contain milk, then you would not believe the amount of things that contain soy. In fact, for a week after that appointment, I was having soy in a salad dressing and didn't even know it (so I am now one week dairy/soy free instead of the two that I should be).

The good news is that this isn't affecting Peter in a negative way. He is still a happy baby, and you would never know that there was anything wrong. He is growing and developing as he should be. He still loves to play, talk, smile, laugh, dance and sing. The only difference is my diet, nothing is changing for him.
